Sole aim is to cut carbon footprint An award winning Hull heating company has saved 1000 tonnes of CO2 with the help of a new manufacturing advisory service. Ideal Heating, based on National Avenue in Hull, improved its green credentials with the assistance of the Manufacturing Advisory Service Yorkshire and the Humber (MASY&H). The reduction of 1000 tonnes - or 500,000 sq m - of CO2 is the equivalent to removing 700 cars from the road each year. Thanks to achieving this reduction firm, which was previously called Ideal Boilers, has achieved official recognition from the Carbon Trust. The company won the 2009 Mail News and Media Business Award for Design Excellence for its Ideal Logic Combi boiler which has a 90 per cent efficiency rating. It is also investing in renewable technology with solar thermal and air source heat pumps. Ideal Heating, which has a turnover of £97m and employs 560 people enlisted the help of MAS (Y&H) to cut its carbon output in August last year. Dean Martin, Ideal Heating works engineering manager said: "We already have an environmental management system which is accredited to ISO 14001-2004, but wanted to look at other ways to demonstrate to our customers that we were serious about addressing carbon management." MAS consultant, Steve Anstice from Page Consulting Ltd, carried out a 10 day project onsite aimed at developing a carbon management scheme which would help Ideal Heating achieve the Carbon Trust Standard which is awarded to organisations that reduce their carbon emissions. Mr Martin said: "The board fully backed and supported the idea and Steve did a really good job including a considerable amount of ground work and gathering the technical information required for us to obtain the Standard. "He also developed a 'carbon footprint' analysis which included collecting a wide range of data such as gas and electric usage and business mileage of company vehicles." MAS (Y&H) is an initiative from the Department of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) which provides hands-on advice to manufacturing businesses to improve productivity and efficiency. MAS Y&H is jointly supported by Yorkshire Forward and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and is managed by YFM Business Development, part of the GLE Group, a not for profit enterprise development company.
